Biological Field Technician
One technician is needed for a seasonal OPS position (approx. January through June) supporting studies of wading bird prey in the Florida Everglades. Duties for the position includes field sampling of fish and macro-invertebrates, GIS and GPS data collection, and fish and macro-invertebrate identification and processing in the lab. Sampling is conducted by helicopter across the entire Everglades system. Technicians will also have the opportunity participate in other ongoing research projects within the lab. Qualifications: Applicants should have a B.S. in biology, wildlife, fisheries, natural resources or related field. Applicants should be highly motivated, well organized, and able to work long hours in subtropical wetland field conditions (heat, insects, alligators, snakes, etc.) while maintaining a positive attitude. Experience that demonstrates accurate data collection and research skills specific to the positions above is desirable. A valid driver’s license and a good driving record is required. Biological Field Technician
The Avian Ecology Lab at Florida Atlantic University is hiring one experienced technician for a project investigating the capabilities of small unmanned aerial systems (sUAS) to perform nesting surveys and record ancillary breeding measures of wading bird breeding colonies at Lake Okeechobee in southern Florida. This is a seasonal OPS position (approx. January through June). Duties include assisting a graduate student in recording reproductive breeding parameters of several wading bird species with sUAS and through ground-based nest transects, conducting monthly aerial surveys of breeding colonies from a fixed-wing aircraft, GIS and GPS data collection, recording nest substrate characteristics, and aiding in the construction and deployment of various pieces of equipment associated with the project. Field sites are accessed by an airboat and are located across the littoral zone of Lake Okeechobee. Technician will also participate in supporting studies of wading bird prey availability in the Florida Everglades.
