Nate Winn is a master’s student in Dr. Marguerite Koch’s Aquatic Botany Ecology Lab. Nate studies the tropical seagrass, Thalassia testudinum, which has recently undergone die-offs in Florida Bay. His work is focused on a structure in seagrass known as the rhizome, which runs horizontally below the sediment with roots projecting off of it. Nate’s research question seeks to address whether or not T. testudinum is capable of storing oxygen in its rhizome as a defense mechanism against hypoxia (low oxygen conditions) and toxic hydrogen sulfide intrusion. In his free time, Nate enjoys fishing, diving, hiking, and camping.
