2023 was a big one for the FAU Marine Lab!  Below is our Review of 2023 by the numbers, representing just a snapshot of what was accomplished by the six wonderful principal investigators and their students that conduct research in our lab. Follow the links in the descriptions below to learn even more about our 2023 accomplishments.

Over 252,000 people. Through our Marine Lab Visitor’s Gallery and 15 outreach events in 2023, our team reached an impressive number of teachers, students, and the public in our local community! We take great pride in sharing our science, not only with our academic peers, but with much broader audiences.

Nearly 10,000 digital interactions. Through our website, newsletter, and social media platforms, the FAU Marine Lab has been able to expand our outreach efforts far beyond our local community as well. With a combined 1,400 followers on Facebook and Instagram, over 8,000 visits to our FAU Marine Lab website, and 155 subscribers to our monthly newsletter, we have created a large and growing digital footprint.

338 sea turtle hatchlings. In 2023, the FAU Marine Lab brought in leatherback, loggerhead, and green hatchlings to help us answer some important conservation questions, such as: how many males and females are produced on our southeastern Florida beaches? Though many turtles have already been released, some of these are still growing in the lab. Swing by the Marine Lab to see them before they hitch a ride out to the “Big Blue.” Once the 2023 turtles are gone, we clean, repair, and gear up for the 2024 nesting season!

Over 27,767 miles traveled. Students and faculty traveled around the globe to present their research to wider audiences, but importantly remain close to home to communicate our science to our local communities too. We have been busy sharing research conducted by members of the FAU Marine Lab at conferences near and far. From state-side conferences like the Southeast Regional Sea Turtle Meeting in Alabama, to those (quite literally) on the other side of the world at the International Congress of Vertebrate Morphology in Cairns, Australia, our researchers have been spreading the word about the groundbreaking work being done at the FAU Marine Lab.

9 Publications. Whether conducted in the walls of the FAU Marine Lab, across the street along our shores, or as products of collaboration, our FAU Marine Lab researchers have had their hands in several peer-reviewed publications in 2023. Click on the titles below to access the groundbreaking research published in 2023.

The lab is already buzzing in the new year! We look forward to adding to these numbers in 2024.
