Research Professor Emeritus Michael Salmon, from the Department of Biological Sciences at Florida Atlantic, has just published his new book, “All About Sea Turtle Behavior: Essays for the Curious Naturalist .” The book gives readers a rare glimpse into the lives of these remarkable creatures as it explores their evolutionary history, unique adaptations, and extraordinary navigation skills. These ancient reptiles migrate hundreds of miles to locate nursery areas, nesting beaches and foraging grounds, thanks to their specialized ability to detect the earth’s magnetic field. They use that capability to find goals, such as island nesting beaches, in an oceanic environment that to humans, appears featureless. Also described are the efforts being made to restore sea turtle populations worldwide, most currently considered either threatened or endangered.
The book uniquely describes not only what we’ve learned over the past 40 years, but also the experiments that have provided the evidence. Much of this new information was obtained by studies done by scientists (faculty and graduate students) working at Florida Atlantic University.
Proceeds from the sale of the book will be donated to two local organizations (Loggerhead Marinelife Center of Juno Beach; The Turtle Hospital at Marathon Florida Keys) that rehabilitate sick and injured marine turtles so that they can be released, in good condition, back into their natural environment.
