Boca Fertility achieves increased clinical pregnancy rates with sperm separation device “Zymot”, co-developed by FAU Scientist

A pioneering and successful fertility center since 1982, Boca Fertility was the first IVF center in Palm Beach County to accomplish a successful pregnancy and delivery of a baby conceived through IVF. Countless numbers of infertile couples are now parents thanks to the care they received at Boca Fertility. With the center’s commitment to excellence, Boca Fertility was also recently rated in the top 10% of America’s Best Fertility Clinics in 2023 by Newsweek.

With the help of the fertility center’s leadership and dedicated service of its clinical staff, the center has engaged in the adoption of innovative technologies to improve their clinical outcomes. One of these technologies was the use of a recent FDA-approved medical device, Zymot, for sperm preparation, which was co-developed by one of FAU’s scientists and Bioengineers – Dr. Waseem Asghar, Ph.D. from the College of Engineering and Computer Science. The sperm separation device, which is a sleekly designed microfluidic chip, can be used to process sperm samples for assisted reproductive technology procedures such as Intra-Uterine Insemination and Invitro Fertilization.

In a recent small sample-sized in-house trial (N=35), the center utilized the FDA-approved device to prepare semen samples which were solely utilized for Invitro Fertilization of eggs (i.e., conventional insemination with normospermic samples). About 70% of the cases – from all ages ended up with at least one viable Blastocyst embryo for transfer. Since most IVF centers now perform a freeze-all cycle, of the cases that proceeded to a Frozen Embryo Transfer, about 73% (from all age groups) had a positive pregnancy and an ongoing pregnancy rate of 50%. For statistical segmentation of ages 37 years and below, a pregnancy rate of 100% was in fact recorded for those age groups (N=10) and an ongoing pregnancy rate of 80% was recorded for the age group of 35 years and below at the time of assessment.

With the support of a forward-thinking clinical laboratory team at Boca Fertility, directed by Dr. Michael Matilsky, Ph.D., HCLD and the Medical Director and founder of Boca Fertility, Dr. Moshe R. Peress, MD, highly trained in Reproductive Endocrinology and Infertility, the center will be open to more scientific collaborations with the adoption of such innovative product applications in the field of reproductive medicine.

Dr. Olumide Adenmosun, Ph.D., M.B.A., MS., GradCert. (Bioeng.), Clinical Embryologist and Andrologist at Boca Fertility Clinic, coordinated the trial of the Zymot sperm-separation device. Dr. Adenmosun also currently works as an Adjunct Instructor for General and Health Services Microbiology at FAU Boca and Davie campuses, where he also doubles as a Program Manager for two continuing education courses in DNA Forensics and Assisted Reproductive Technology at the College of Science. Dr. Adenmosun had also utilized a fabricated version of the device in his doctoral studies to perform genotypic sperm sorting for the exclusion of certain genetic diseases such as Cystic Fibrosis and certain X-linked Disorders – under the co-advisorship of Dr. Waseem Asghar, Ph.D. and Late Dr. James Kumi-Diaka, D.V.M., Ph.D., from the department of Biological Sciences. His ongoing post-doctoral studies on the device application have been accepted for presentations at the global ESHRE (European Society of Human Reproduction and Embryology) conference two-years in a row – at Milan, 2022 and Copenhagen, 2023 – respectively.
