What is the FAU Microbiome Innovation Cluster?

At the heart of our mission is the dedication to advancing the understanding of microbiomes in diverse environments, ranging from human sciences to environmental ecosystems. Employing a multidisciplinary approach, the MIC unites experts in areas such as biology, ecology, genetics, chemistry, geosciences, physics, and biotechnology. By diving into the complexities of microbial communities, we aim to confront the intricate challenges facing traditional agriculture and cultivate interest in the next generation for careers in food, agriculture, and natural resources.

Our Commitment:

  1. Filling the Knowledge Gap:
    The Microbiome Innovation Clusterrecognizes the challenges faced by many students and young entrepreneurs in keeping up with the rapid advancements in microbiome science, as well as the decline in interest in the next generation in careers involving FANH disciplines. To address this, we are dedicated to bridging the learning gap through a diverse range of educational initiatives. From interactive webinars to in-depth seminars and comprehensive courses, the MIC is the gateway to current and relevant knowledge in the microbiome and FANH domain.

  2. Empowering Through Research Opportunities:
    Education is not just about learning! It also involves actively participating in the creation of knowledge. The MIC is committed to providing access to cutting-edge research opportunities for all students, with a particular focus on underrepresented students in science. By improving access to FANH-based research initiatives, we will empower students to contribute meaningful scientific advancements in Food, Agriculture, Natural Resources, and Human Sciences.

    Collaboration is at the heart of scientific breakthroughs. The Microbiome Innovation Cluster is poised to create a dynamic platform for collaboration, fostering partnerships between FAU faculty and external entities conducting FANH-related research, such as Florida International University. This collaborative network spans diverse fields, including Plant Biotechnology, Microbiology, Soil Chemistry, Hydrology, Biocontrol Agents, Plant Health, and Microbial Ecology. By breaking down the traditional “every man/woman for themselves” mentality commonly found in research, the MIC seeks to amplify the impact of research and address complex challenges collectively.
